Redfish on the fly in Aransas Bay Rockport, Texas

Here is your mid January Rockport fishing report for Rockport, Texas and surrounding waters. With the first couple weeks of 2017 in the books already, we are already well on our way through the winter months here in Rockport and on the Texas Coast. Before you know, our temps will start warming up again. But until then, your Rockport fishing report is still in winter mode.

The fishing the past week was pretty good. We had 6 straight days of heavy winds. This made for some tough sledding out there. But hats off to our brave folks who toughed it out each and every day this week, and caught some fish. It wasn’t always easy, but it was doable. The temps were plenty warm, and the water was fine as well. We were cycling through a full moon, which may help explain a couple of our mornings be a bit slower than desired. But as we got closer to mid-day, there were plenty of fish moving around each day. We could find a few tailing here and there, but most were singles cruising the flats. Once they were up and moving, they were plenty willing to eat a well presented fly.

As we look forward to the coming week, it appears we have the chance at a little weather. As we write this, it is already raining in the cities up North. It remains decent here though. But it does appear that we will have some clouds and chances of a little shower here and there this week. Winds look to be fairly low though, so we expect to be able to get out on the water most of the week. May be a little lower light than desired, but should be doable if the winds remain fairly calm.

We will keep the Rockport fishing reports coming this week, as the weather is a little in flux. So stay tuned for the up to date reports.
