Redfish on the fly in Texas

It’s hard to believe that the end of the month is here already. So this will be the last Rockport fishing report for January. This month has been flying by. But February is right around the corner, and we are that much closer to a little warmer weather. But for now, the Rockport fishing report isn’t too shabby.

Wind has been the name of the game for the past week or more. A lot of wind. It started off last Sunday, with winds blowing upwards of 50 mph. We actually had a pretty nice day to follow on Monday, although we had a bunch of water blown out of the bays. The wind continued to blow pretty hard all week from the North. It was doable each day, but certainly was a lot of work.

With all this North wind blowing, the water remains very low. This will rule out some spots, but creates opportunities in others. The fish have certainly been moved around a little bit too. But once you find fish, you find a lot of fish. They are schooling up in pretty good numbers. Often seeing 25+ fish moving around together. Also, there are large schools of drum moving around the area as well.

Despite the change in water and all the wind, the fish have been plenty willing to eat for us. Schooled up fish aren’t picky at all. Which is to be expected. The cruising fish are eating well also. We like the crab pattern these days, in darker colors. But other patterns have worked too.

In all this skinny water, the fish have been pretty touchy. Even with some pretty solid wind chop on the water, they are a bit spooky. But that is to be expected with the low water and sun. But there are still fish tailing, swimming with their backs out of the water and crashing bait. You just might have to make a bit longer shots to get your fly to them.

Its looking like the coming week will be excellent weather. We will shed some of this strong wind and have temps closer to 80 degrees each day. This should have plenty of fish moving around all of the bays for us. We will be out on the water every day and will try to get a midweek report up as well.

We will keep you informed and keep the Rockport fishing report up to date this coming week. And of course folks can always follow along on Instagram or Facebook for the very latest news. We try to post something most every day there. Or of course you can email any time for additional info or ask about what we did that day.

There are still some February dates available to fish. And again, Spring dates have been filling up very quickly. But the winter fishing has been good. So if you are interested in getting out on the water, contact us soon so you can secure your dates on the calendar.
