Port Aransas Redfishing on the Fly

Time for your weekend Rockport fishing report for the first week of 2017. And what better do we have to do, since the weather outside complete sucked today! And tomorrow isn’t looking much better. But there is hope, and blue skies, on the horizon.

Fishing this past week was outstanding. We had 3 days of completely warm and flat calm weather. It made for some excellent fishing. Aaron, pictured above, would completely agree. He and his father were in town for four days of fishing. Three of them were dead calm and blue skies. The other had a few clouds and manageable North wind. But there were more fish to the boat than we cared to count. It was unreal.

But, it is still winter. So we were slapped in the face today/tomorrow with a nasty cold front. So a little rebooking, fly tying and other down day activities are the name of the game now. But it will be short lived. The Rockport fishing report is already looking much better by Sunday. So we will be back at it again starting then, and through the week.

Fly selection has remained the same this week. Our best being a black crab pattern. About the size of a quarter has been what we are throwing. It has moved, and stopped, more fish than anything else. The topwater bite was ok, but not great. All those calm days were not ideal for the topwater bite. But a few were still willing to play. Also, in the slick water, we did have a few more fish “refuse” our well presented fly. Whether a crab, baitfish or other pattern, it did happen a little. We have been fishing 10lb tippet, long (12-14′) leaders and still had a few look and not eat a well placed cast. I attribute this to the very calm water more than anything. Changing the fly didn’t seem to change much, or crack the code. Just a few touchy fish in those conditions. But not too bad.

After this little front passes, its looking like next week will be back to normal. Temps right around 80 degrees and winds from the SE again. We expect to see a bunch of hungry fish in the days following the storm. But we will update the Rockport fishing report as this happens.

There are still plenty of opportunities to get out and hunt some winter redfish on the fly in the Rockport area. If you are interested, contact us and we can get your trips booked.
