Redfish on the Fly in Rockport, Texas

Today brings the end to another week. Also, another Rockport fishing report for late March. The month is coming towards its end, and hopefully, the wind will go with it.

The Rockport fishing report for this past week was pretty good. But the wind report was not. Spring is definitely here though. Most mornings are plenty manageable with winds somewhere in the 10-12 mph range. But by the early afternoon, you will want to hold on to your hat. The upper teens, or better, has been the norm these days. Certainly not enough wind to shut us down or dirty up the water. But plenty annoying for those trying to get their fly in front of a fish.

Our mornings have been very good. We’ve been going pretty early and seeing a lot of action during the lower light hours. Lots of fishing tailing and crashing the banks in schools. This has made for some pretty quick action in the mornings. Put ANYTHING in front of them and you will be rewarded.

As the sun gets higher, we are finding the majority of the fish cruising solo or in two and threes. These have been pretty spooky in the blazing sun. So we recommend making your first cast, your best one. Maybe easier said than done, with the wind blowing like crazy. But fish are still eating well for us. Crab patterns are still working. But we are throwing quite a bit more baitfish stuff lately. Reducers and gurglers have all taken plenty of fish.

We lost a lot of water in the bay early this past week. So we have had fairly low water to deal with. Not bad at all. Maybe not ideal for some of our favorite hiding spots in big wind. But as the week has gone on, the levels have continued to creep up steadily. So not a problem at all for the boats we have had out.

The coming week looks like much of the same. A little wind here and there, but easily manageable each day. Maybe the chance at a small storm mid week, which we are fine with. This will get the fish going both before and after it pushes through. Plus, these springtime storms usually amount to little more than some dark skies and a few ours of hellacious wind. Totally worth it, for the calm after the storm.

Capt. Jeff will be up in Fort Worth, TX on Tuesday April 4th speaking to the fine folks at the Fort Worth Fly Fishers. So if you are in the neighborhood, swing by and say hello. He will most certainly ramble on about all things redfishy and probably give away a bunch of free stuff as well. So stop by and say hello.

We still have some more news coming up in April. We will hopefully have our new lodge option available to show everyone soon. We have a ton of new Fly Fish Rockport swag available. New shirts, hats, face masks and who knows what else we will find. So keep checking back as we try to get all this stuff up and running… in between guide trips.

We have boats out every day this week, fishing the bays from Matagorda to the Laguna Madre. We will keep the Rockport fishing reports coming. And of course folks can always follow along on Instagram, Facebook and even Snapchat for the very latest news. We try to post something most every day there. Or of course you can email any time for additional info or ask about what we did that day.

Spring fishing is upon us! So if you are interested in getting out on the water, contact us soon so you can secure your dates on the calendar.
