After slacking a little bit earlier this week, we are finally getting around to an updated Rockport fishing report. Also the first Rockport fishing report for April. So here we go…

The fishing has still been very good for the past week, or since our last report. We continue to have a lot of water in the bays. This has the fish spread out all over the place. So we aren’t seeing many schools of fish really. Maybe the occasional little school of 5 or more, but that’s about it. Instead, we are seeing lots of pairs or singles cruising around or tailing early. But as expected, when the water gets up, the fish are spread out a good bit. This means that you may search a little at times, in between shots. But you will still see a lot of fish each day.

With the higher water, we are fishing as far back as we can. Lakes, marshes, creeks, etc. What was dry land 2 weeks ago, is now well over a foot deep. So those fish have continued to push back, as are we. Again, we are seeing lots of fish. But our best fishing is still deep into the marshes and in the skinniest water we can find.

The fly selection has remained largely the same. Although we have had a few picky fish as of late. But nothing too serious. Crab, reducers, ice shrimp are all working well. The topwater bite has been very very good as well. We have turned solo fish cruising banks, and also moving fish that are swimming in pairs or small schools. They have all been pretty receptive to topwater flies, even in flat calm water. That makes for some really fun sight fishing. You won’t get them all to eat, but its certainly a lot of fun watching them swim around under your topwater presentation.

The real name of the game lately has been the wind. It is Spring here on the Coastal Bend of Texas. So the wind is just going to be a factor most days. Our Rockport fishing report wouldn’t be complete without mentioning it. The good news is, the weather has been great. The bad news, it has been blowing most every day to some annoying degree.

Most mornings are very nice. Lighter winds are common. A few days, we have even been dead calm until nearly noon. But, as the day warms up, the wind comes with it. So it is not uncommon for us to be poling around in winds reaching the upper teens, or better, by mid afternoon. Some days, even stronger. The good news is, the fish don’t care a bit. In fact, they rather enjoy the moving water. The bad news, it’s not exactly conducive to easy casting. But for those who are willing and able, there are still plenty of fish to be had.

While we had Capt. Gibson putting Brandon on a bunch of reds and drum (pictured above), Capt. Jeff spent last night up in Fort Worth speaking to the fine folks at the Fort Worth Fly Fishers. He discussed a bit about the Coastal Bend fishing, flies, gear, tactics, etc. For the folks that showed up, they were rewarded with all kinds of cool swag as well. There were hats, shirts and other random stuff being tossed all over the room. So thank you to everyone who made it out for that.

We still have some more news coming up in April. We will hopefully have our new lodge option available to show everyone soon. We have a ton of new Fly Fish Rockport swag available. New shirts, hats, face masks and who knows what else we will find. So email us if you would like to get your hands on something. Hopefully we will get some images of all that up on the site soon.

We have boats out every day this week, fishing the bays from Matagorda to the Laguna Madre. We will keep the Rockport fishing reports coming. And of course folks can always follow along on Instagram, Facebook and even Snapchat for the very latest news. We try to post something most every day there. Or of course you can email any time for additional info or ask about what we did that day.

Spring fishing is upon us! So if you are interested in getting out on the water, contact us soon so you can secure your dates on the calendar.
