Rockport Fishing Report – February 3rd

Apparently it's been "a while" since we've updated our Rockport fishing report. Oops! Busy busy over here, and sometimes things just slip through the cracks. But since we are sitting here, staring down the barrel of the worst cold front of the year, we find ourselves with a bit more time on our hands. So we will try to spend our time wisely and go a little housekeeping on the website, including an up to date Rockport fishing report. So, here we go. After a very warm and mild December down here on the Texas Coast, our January kind of went to crap. A couple days after New Years,

December Redfishing Refusal!!! #Shorts

Texas Redfishing Refusal!!! Well, they can't all work out... I guess. This is a short clip from the 8th of December. Calm winds, cloudy skies and lots of redfish in skinny water. But they weren't easy. This clip is pretty funny though. You never know what's gonna happen out there!

Tying G’s Black Crab For Fall and Winter Redfish

Tying G's Black Crab for Fall and Winter Redfish Captain Gibson is back with another one of his favorite redfish fly patterns. As we continue into Fall, and very soon Winter, this is a go to pattern for Capt. Gibson, as well as all of our other Fly Fish Rockport fishing guides. As our waters begin to cool a bit more in the fall, many of our sea grasses begin to die or go dormant. Many of them will turn brown and eventually float away with the tides, leaving clean mud or sand bottom behind. This black crab fly is easily seen by both the angler and the

Tying the Shminnow for Jack Crevalle in Texas

Tying The Shminnow Fly in White For Jack Crevalle and Tarpon Spring is here on the Gulf Coast of Texas. That means our migratory fish are here as well. Jacks, tarpon, kingfish and cobia are all common targets for the fly fishing guides at Fly Fish Rockport this time of year. The Shminnow is one of our favorite flies for Jack Crevalle here in Texas. Although it can work well for tarpon as well. The pattern is a bit more sleek than other topwater flies, making it much easier to cast. Yet it still floats well and dives when stripped. Tying this fly is Fly Fish Rockport Captain,

Rockport Fishing Report – May 13th

The end of the week is almost here. So we figured a Rockport fishing report would be a good idea. Hopefully we can fill you in with what to expect leading into this coming weekend, and the days beyond. So for those looking to head towards the Texas Coast to do a little fly fishing, read on as we've got you covered. First and foremost, you must know what weekend it is in Rockport. It's pretty much the worst weekend of the entire year around here. And by that we mean, crowded. It is Babes on the Bay weekend coming up. That means the largest fishing tournament of the

Tying G’s Texas Toad Fly in Olive

Tying G's Texas Toad Fly in Olive Toad style flies are always an excellent option while fly fishing for redfish and black drum on the Texas flats. Our Fly Fish Rockport fly fishing guides use these flies often, in a variety of colors, weights and sizes. Darker colors, like this olive version, are usually our favorites. But lighter shrimp type colors work as well. Or perhaps try tying this same pattern on a 2/0 hook for tarpon? The Toad is also a proven tarpon pattern, particularly in the Florida Keys. Here, Fly Fish Rockport guide Captain Gibson ties his Texas Toad in a dark olive color. You can

Tying G’s Marsh Minnow Fly

We tie this fly in a variety of sizes, weights and colors to suit the conditions at the time. Fly Fish Rockport guide, Captain Gibson, shows you how he ties this fly here. Tying ingredients for this pattern are included in the comments on the video page as well. Join the Fly Fish Rockport newsletter to get future posts right in your inbox.

Tying G’s Kingfish Ballyhoo Fly

It's that time of year where our Fly Fish Rockport fly fishing guides are taking advantage of any opportunity to sneak away from the flats, and out into the blue water in search of our favorite migratory pursuits. Every Spring we await the arrival of our Kingfish (King Mackerel). These toothy predators lurk just off the beaches of our coastline and are a great target with a fly rod. But you've got to have the right flies in your box! Here, Fly Fish Rockport guide Captain Gibson teaches you how to tie one of his favorite patterns for Kingfish. This is a must have when fly fishing nearshore or

Rockport Fishing Report – May 29th

It's Friday, and darn near June, and time for another Rockport fishing report. This will be the last report for the month of May. Also, just in time for the weekend. Although it pretty much seems that you can't really tell the difference between the weekdays and weekends around here lately. Regardless, here is your Rockport fishing report. As mentioned already, it has been hectic down on the Texas Coast lately. We managed to survive Memorial Day Weekend, somehow. Ask any local, and they will tell you they've never seen it that busy around the area... EVER. It was completely nuts. Luckily, we were able to get out on
