It sucks outside!!!

So this may be a pretty quick and painless Rockport Fly Fishing report for the week. But since we have some time on our hands, why not at least do something with this thing we suppose?

The weather is the big story lately. Today marked day number 11 in a row that we have had to cancel all of our trips. And we still have the remainder of this week that it looks like we will be kept off the water with weather as well. Not exactly what we would expect for our Fall fishing season.

It’s one thing to get a cold front here or there. But these things are stacking up like waves and just continually pounding on us. So we have no choice but to sit and wait.

There has been lots of fly trying. Lots of napping. Lots of pacing back and fourth in the house. Capt. Jeff was gonna fly to Key West just to try and get away from the weather, but its raining there too! So, back to the sitting and waiting. It’s even too crappy out to golf! And a few of our guys really love to golf.

It looks like we can finally dust the skiffs off this coming weekend. But who knows if that will change before then. But as of the time of this writing, we are fishing Saturday… FINALLY. So we will get some boats out on the water and hopefully be able to report back early next week with some fishy intel.

Happy Thanksgiving to all, from all of us here at Fly Fish Rockport. We are thankful for everyone that helps make this possible and spends time with us on the water.

We will continue to report back as we can with what we are seeing out there. Also, we have a new series of videos coming to our Youtube channel as well. Something kinda funny and different to do. Flyfishing is not serious. Or at least it shouldn’t be. So we are gonna have a little fun and make a few funny videos based on the lighter side of red fishing.

If you are looking to get out on the water, you can always contact us any time if you would like to BOOK A TRIP or need any up to the minute Southwest Texas fly fishing or Rockport fishing report type news. And FINALLY Capt. Jeff got his act together to update the Rockport Fly Fishing Report. It has certainly been “a while” since our last. But rest assured that we have been out there most every day chasing fish up and down the flats of the Texas Coast.

The fishing has been very good. Fall is here and things are finally cooling off. All positives for the fishing down here. We are still seeing schools and tails most every day. More so in the morning than anything. But finding tails anytime during the day isn’t really too shocking.

We are fishing all over the place lately. Some of the guys are loving it up North; POC, Mesquite Bay, etc. Some of our other guides are spending a bunch of time South of Port Aransas… or further. But reports across the board have been really good.

Lots of over-slot fish moving around the flats right now. Maybe even a bull here and there. But most of those really big fish haven’t quite made it in to the flats yet. Pretty sure they are waiting for a bit cooler water. But we aren’t far off from those 40-50″ fishing swimming around the flats.

For flies, most everything is working. The fish are just happy. Black and purple is still out favorite. But white worked just as well. Or anything shrimpy is great too. If you were to hang out at the table of death (cleaning station) while bait guys are there, you will notice every redfish is stuffed full of shrimp right now. So choose a fly and fish it with confidence. It will work.

We are out every day for the rest of the week this week, and the foreseeable future. We will continue to report back as we can with what we are seeing out there. Also, we have a new series of videos coming to our Youtube channel as well. New month, and time for a new Rockport Fishing Report. Especially since it’s been a little bit since our last. So we will bring you up to speed on what you missed and what we are seeing out on the Texas flats these days.

The fishing has been very good. Doesn’t really matter where you choose to fish, it’s just pretty darn solid out there. Big schools, small schools, tails, crashers and anywhere in between. The fish are plenty happy each day and our clients are getting lots of shots. So no complaints there.

It is the beginning time of Summer around here now. So the temps are getting pretty warm, as is the water. So it’s a better morning game than late. But we are still having solid fishing into the early afternoon. So all good there.

But Summer also means crowds. So there are far more people on the water most days. Tournaments are in the area every weekend these days as well. TOURNAMENTS SUCK!!! No two ways about it. They just do. We already have enough boat traffic on the coast. Encouraging even more is not the answer. So we are stuck with that nightmare for the next few months. Ugh!

As for the fishing… We would like to say its just “easy”, but that wouldn’t be entirely true I guess. There are moments out there where you have to try a little. But for the most part, there are large schools moving around all over the place. And they are going to eat anything at all, so long as you get it within their sight. Not exactly rocket science there. Floating, sinking, moving, not moving… it kinda hasn’t mattered.

On the really calm days, they will be a bit tougher to get close to. But most of that is due to the fact that there are ten thousand flats boats out there harassing them every day. But other than that, just get anything to that gigantic mass of redfish and you’re in business.

We have posted a few pics of jacks lately, and are getting a ton of questions. So clearly the jacks are around as well. On the light wind days, they are moving around well. Some around Port A here and there, but much better by POC or Matagorda. Go early in the morning and be ready for combat fishing. There will be lots of boats ripping around chasing the schools, but it can be done. Anything that moves will get eaten. Topwater flies are best, if you can get em out there with the heavy rods. If not, something big and dark stripped crazy fast will work. If not, toss anything out there. It’s a jack and they eat ANYTHING!!!

Looking like more of the same moving forward. Sunny, some wind and temps a bit hotter than we would like for the next little while. The fishing will remain solid for a while longer, before the dog days of Summer begin to set in. But for now, it’s all systems go on the Texas Coast.

We are out every day for the rest of the week this week, and the foreseeable future. We will continue to report back as we can with what we are seeing out there. Also, we have a new series of videos coming to our Youtube channel as well. Something kinda funny and different to do. Flyfishing is not serious. Or at least it shouldn’t be. So we are gonna have a little fun and make a few funny videos based on the lighter side of red fishing.

It’s been almost two weeks since our last report, so we will do our best to get you caught up on what we are seeing out on the water each day, and what we are expecting for the days to come. Then hopefully we will have another Rockport Fly Fishing Report for you in a weeks time.

Overall, we would say that it’s been pretty solid fly fishing The Coastal Bend. Really, the weather has been the only drawback for us. We’ve had a decent shortage of sunshine, and over abundance of wind. Not exactly ideal for the whole sight fishing thing. But neither are bad enough to keep us off the water at all. Just really annoying.

For the past two weeks, or more, it seems like we wake up each morning to clouds and winds already blowing 15 mph. or so. Then it picks up from there. Seeing 20-25 mph every day is pretty common place. Again, not a deal breaker at all. But it is really annoying.

Most of the days have remained mostly cloudy until the early afternoons. Then the sun will finally burn through, just about the time you are thinking about heading to the ramp. Really annoying! Not really our norm for this time of year. It is Spring. So wind is just a normal part of the deal. But typically our mornings aren’t too bad, then you know it will ramp up around noon and on through the end of the day. But usually we have plenty of sunshine to make it all happen still. 15-25 mph and cloudy all day is just a huge pain in the ass and not easy on anyone out there.

All that being said, the fish are there. Or at least we assume they are. Ha! We still see plenty of fish every day, just not as many as we should be. Also, not as many quality shots as we would like each day. With the sun out, we should be seeing 100-200 fish a day out there. Hopefully a good number of shots out of those fish as well. But with all the cloudy days, it’s been a little tougher. Many of the fish we are seeing, are running from the boat already. Again… annoying!

The water had been up a good bit for a couple weeks straight. But here in the last few days, we finally had a good bit of it flushed out with some strong tides. This left a good number of flats much shallower and easy pickings. Since the water dropped, we are seeing really big schools of fish every day. Yesterday and today our guides found schools of 75-100 fish in a few different spots. Plus many others in the 20-30 range. All of them are feeding like crazy and moving across the flats steadily.

Schools this big don’t go away easily. So its not too difficult to pull one out of the school, then get back in front of it and get another. Wash, rinse, repeat and you can boat a bunch of fish in a pretty quick time. Those schooling fish just regroup and keep plowing across the flats, looking for food. This has been a savior on a couple of these days with tougher weather conditions.

As far as flies and stuff, we have done a bunch of different stuff. The schooled up fish don’t care at all. They will eat anything that moves. This includes topwater flies as well. They are just gettin’ after it and hungry. So throw whatever you want in there and be ready. But we highly recommend anything topwater’ish. Way more fun.

For the reds that aren’t in schools and acting stupid, they are still eating ok. A few of our boats this week reported some picky fish. Part of that could’ve been that some of the shots were pretty close to the boats, with the crappy light conditions. But it seemed like some of the singles or paired up fish were on a little smaller program. They would sometimes follow, but not commit, to a crab or slightly larger fly. So putting something smaller and “easy” in front of them seemed to help a bunch. Smaller grass shrimp patterns worked well. We were screwing around trying to catch sheepshead one afternoon with a mud crab pattern about the size of a dime. That ended up catching 8-9 reds that day as well. They just seemed to pick up the smaller stuff without much issue. Probably more an attitude thing that fly thing. But something we noticed.

There are still black drum swimming around EVERYWHERE!!! Large, small or everything in between. They are just freaking everywhere out there. Some folks will cast at them, many don’t care and watch them swim by. But they are there and most are willing to eat for you. Darker patterns are better for this stinky things, as usual.

There are plenty of jacks around as well. Unfortunately, we haven’t really had much weather cooperation to put in quality time to play with them. Most days have been pretty rough and not worth the effort to go mess with them. But we have had our shots here and there. They are around in good numbers and will remain for the warmer months. We would assume the tarpon, kings and everything else are here too. But with it blowing 25 every day, we haven’t even bothered to go look really. But sooner than later, we will get the big boat out and start making it happen.

The past few days have been really warm down here as well. Heat index today said 107 by mid afternoon. Seems a bit early in the year for that garbage weather! But our water is already really warm, grass is growing and apparently it is never going to rain here again! We could really use a good shot of rain down this way. Or any change in the weather to kind of mix things up a bit. We would appreciate it, and so would our fish.

This coming weekend is Babes on the Bay here in Rockport. It is hands down the worst weekend of the year to be here. It’s going to be crowded on the water, at the ramps and pretty much everywhere else as well. Pretty much a nightmare every year. But we hear that they have more entries this year than ever! So that’s special I guess? Either way, its a mess out there. So we will be trying to hide and fish some different stuff at the end of the week. If you are thinking of coming down to do a little fishing on your own, you may want to keep that part in mind. It will be a junk show out on the water. Of course there are tournaments most weekends from now on. And they are all terrible. Especially the fly fishing tournaments!!! But this is the biggest of the year and just something to keep in mind.

We are out every day for the rest of the week this week, and the foreseeable future. We will continue to report back as we can with what we are seeing out there. Also, we have a new series of videos coming to our Youtube channel as well. So I guess we can carve out some time to update our Rockport Fly Fishing Report here in April. It’s been a little bit since our last update. Not too much has changed really. But we will fill you in below on what we are doing and seeing here while fly fishing in Rockport and surrounding waters.

First off… the wind sucks!!! It’s been a little blowy lately. Enough so that we have scratched all our boats the past three days around here. Sustained winds in the 20’s and gusts up into the low 40’s mean that we don’t need to be out there. It’s gotten so bad, that we’ve even avoided the golf course lately. That means it’s bad!

But tomorrow is another day. We will be out there again, and for the rest of the week, looking for fish. It will still be pretty darn windy the rest of this week leading in to Easter, but not so bad that we will have to cancel boats. So we will be out there every day for the foreseeable future now.

Since our last report, things have continued to fish well and even improve. Of course those were the sunny days. We did have a solid run of days that were dark, damp and windy as crap. Those proved to be a bit on the tougher side. The fish were there, but not nearly as happy as we would like. Add in the fact that you couldn’t see crap, and that made for some tougher days early last week. But on the days the sun was out, it was dirty good. Wind, or no wind, it really didn’t matter. On the sunny days, the fish were happy and moving all over the place.

We had a few days of fairly high water last week. But as soon as you got used to that, the wind blew hard from the Northwest and the water was gone. So we were back to running around looking at flats that were completely dry and finding the fish in different spots. Not a big deal really, but a little annoying for this time of year. Water this low isn’t exactly the norm. But, it does force the fish into spots where they are fairly predictable. Finding schools of 200-300 fish was pretty common on those low water days. If you found them, you found them. If not, you were searching for a while. But they were there, waiting for the water to come back in so they could move back on to the flats. This made for some pretty easy fishing, when you found those huge schools. But many of our favorite flats were high and dry there for a week or so. Again, just annoying for this time of year.

On the brighter days, the fish are way shallow chasing bait, crashing, tailing and moving all around. Shots are not hard to come by in the mornings. As the wind gets up, they change the program a bit and things get a little trickier, but not bad. They have been willing to eat anything we’ve put in front of them. Many of the fish are still puking up minnows when we land them in the boat. But any fly has worked just fine for us. The black/purple crab is still first out of the box each day. After a couple fish are in the boat, a Pop Tart topwater fly was the jam. Plenty of willing fish to chase that on the surface.

We are starting to see jacks ripping around as well. Haven’t really had the weather to go mess around in the open water for them yet, but they are running through the flats in a few spots here and there. So not a bad idea to have a heavier rod rigged up and ready to roll, if that is something you’re interested in. They are here for the season it appears. Maybe, if we can get some decent weather, we will be able to poke around and see if the Kings, Tarpon and other stuff are in as well. If they aren’t, they won’t be too far behind.

We are out every day for the rest of the week this week. It’s going to be windy and a bit cloudier than we would like, but at least we can get our boats on the water and people on some fish.

It’s the end of another week today, and also the end of Spring Break for most Texans. So after a pretty hectic couple of weeks, we are updating our Rockport Fishing Report. We will cover what all we saw on the water this past week, and also what we expect as we close out the month of March and move on to April.

We’ve finally had a solid week of sunshine and warmer weather down here on the Texas Coast. And it was about damn time! This did great things for our fishing, compared to our last couple of Rockport fly fishing reports. The water is warming up and so are the redfish. Fishing is finally where you would expect it to be this time of year. It’s really good!

In our last report, about a week ago, we had just gotten a bunch of water back. The tides had been hovering around their Winter lows for a good while, and we finally got our first Spring tide. We kind of expected that to hang around for the foreseeable future. Boy were we wrong. Ha! About 36 hours later, we were even lower than we were the prior week. A couple days of stout Northwest winds, and some strong tidal movements, and that water flushed outta here in a single night. Not the end of the world, just a little change in the plan.

But what it did do was suck all those fish back out of the further reaches and forced them into more open areas. The days after, we were seeing hundreds of fish each day. 50-60 shots were fairly common in a day, and large schools of reds were running all over the place. That made for some outstanding fishing. And it continued all the way through today.

As of the time of this report, the water is still very low. Although we do have some stronger Southeast winds now, which should help some of it come back a little. But the fishing today was still very good. Schools of reds are plentiful in the mornings. Some will be tailing, in the right spots. But most are just rushing down banks tearing up the food in front of them. As the sun gets higher, the fish are spreading out more and you will start seeing the larger fish swimming solo or a bunch of smaller schools of fish. But there is plenty of activity throughout the day.

The fish are absolutely gorging themselves on food. Very common to have the fish we are landing and handling puking up stuff all over the boat. In some zones you will see mostly grass shrimp coming out of their mouths. Other spots, some miles away, we had glass minnows coming out of every fish we landed this weekend. Their bellies were all full and they were still plenty happy to attack our flies.

The black/purple crab has been the go to this week for most of us. But it wasn’t the only thing working. Shrimp patterns worked just fine as well. Similarly to last week, the fish really weren’t too picky out there. The lone exception being, we did have a couple of our boats reporting that larger flies were often snubbed by otherwise happy fish. Not overly surprising, if they’ve eating a bunch of small shrimp and minnows. And we were finally able to throw some topwater stuff this week as well. Solo cruising fish were all over it on Friday, in slicked out conditions. JJ’s Pop Tart was the fly of choice that day for fish cruising with their backs out of the water. Man, we love Spring fishing!

The warm weather is here to stay now. So we are on the water every day now. The week coming is pretty darn windy though. Even a couple afternoons where we could see gusts up to 30 mils per hour. But other than that, it should be another fishy week down here on the Central Texas Coast. We will get after this week, and report back later with another Rockport fishing reports.

We were down with weather today, so a new fishing report made it on the docket. So here is a look back at how the fly fishing in Rockport, and surrounding waters, has been for the past little bit. And hopefully a look at what we are expecting in the coming weeks time.

Week one of Spring Break is in the books! Week two is going on now, although things are always a little more mellow for the second week. This kind of marks the beginning of the busiest time of year around here. Days are warmer, which brings out the weekend crowds a bit more. Spring Break enhances that a good bit for the first couple of weeks. Then you have the dreaded tournament season starting as well. Seemingly, there is some sort of stupid fishing tournament every weekend somewhere on the coast for the duration of the Summer. Yuck!!!

Last week wasn’t too bad along the coast. The weather cooperated, for the most part. We are still a little bit behind schedule as far as Spring weather. But the sun has been out a bit more lately and warming things up a bit. Just not quite where we might like to be for this late in March. But it’s getting better every day. Our daytime temps have been hanging around the low to mid 70’s most days. More importantly, the overnight temps have improved a good bit as well. We are kinda tired of wearing all that gear on the ride out in the mornings.

With the sun out every day lately, we are finally warming our water up. It too is still a bit behind schedule, but not bad. Most mornings you are seeing 60+ degrees throughout. By the afternoon, 65 degrees is pretty common on the flats. The fish are finally starting to play a little nicer because of it. It had been a pretty long stretch of cool days here, and we were tired of seeing sluggish fish.

Most mornings are starting out with smaller schools and tailing fish. Schools sizes are most commonly in the 5-10 fish range. But as many as 25 or so in the shallows are becoming more and more frequent. Tailing fish have been plentiful before the sun gets too high. Pairs or schools of 5 or so fish are most common right out of the gates. Then we are finding singles here and there in between. But plenty enough to get a good number of shots in during the lower light hours of morning.

If you want to get out of the crazy shallow and look a little deeper, like that 12-18 inches of water range, we are seeing tons of fish. While the water has been slow to warm up, and the tide pretty darn low for the past few weeks, there are big numbers of fish out just a touch deeper. If you have the light and conditions to see them, you can find big numbers of fish. Also lots of big, over slot fish. There are also really large schools of reds in these waters right now. 50-100 redfish is not that surprising. Or, even larger schools if you are willing to throw at black drum. They are cruising around throughout the zone as well, in all sizes. Schools of the very large drum are cruising around in deeper water or around deeper cuts most days.

The tides have been really low for the past month. Again, that is a big reason for so many fish hanging around in slightly deeper water. But as the winds finally started blowing from the right direction this past weekend, the water started pushing back into the bays. As of this morning, things looked pretty much normal around here. So we should have plenty of water to fish most anywhere for the foreseeable future. That warmer water coming in will encourage these fish to spread out a bit better and start filling in some of their favorite shallow spots for us. Way more fun than fishing in deeper water.

We have had a small number of fish crashing banks and eating on the surface. But nothing like you would hope by now. As we continue warming up, this will become common place and we will start tossing more topwater flies out there. But for now, we are still waiting for a bit more activity. This is all the normal Spring activity we are kind of expecting to start any day now.

As far as other flies we’ve been using… They are redfish. They will pretty much eat anything right now. Now that things are warming up, they are partying pretty well out there. So we say throw whatever. Although nothing too large still. They aren’t quite that stupid yet. But we’ve had them eat pretty much any color this week. Or damn near anything that moved. As always, many of our guides prefer black/purple type stuff. But we had them eat white, tan, brown, chartreuse and even some weird yellow/red thing that someone brought. But as things warm up, they will eventually begin to focus in on a few things here and there. Most likely when all the seagrasses brighten up a bit more. Then maybe we will have to get a little more crafty with our fly selection. But until then, you don’t need a different fly. You need a different fish!

Again, we were down with weather today. Tomorrow we have the back end of this storm blowing out of here. So we may not be able to get out tomorrow as well. But the rest of the week is looking great. We have a bunch of boats out every day this week and through the weekend to close out the Texas Spring Break season. Then things are pretty much full go for Spring fishing on the coast. So we have boats out every day from now on.

We will try to keep up to date on the Rockport fishing reports. But with the longer days, sometimes its straight to the golf course once off the water. Gotta get those swings in! But we do have a bunch of new stuff in the works over here that we hope to begin rolling out now that the weather is improving.

These things are lighter, quieter and far shallower than our other Hells Bay boats. Even better, the Cromis is designed to run with a jet outboard. Hand down this is our new favorite boat!

So it seemed like a good opportunity to update the fly fishing report for Rockport, Texas and surrounding waters. It’s been a little over a week since our last report and things are trying to change around here, sorta. So here is the current lay of the land down here and what we are looking at for the coming week or so down on the Texas Coast.

Since our last report, it has been pretty good down on the coast. We’ve had more nice day than bad, which means we have been able to get a bunch of boats out on the water. We still had a couple of cold fronts roll through, but they were are a bit more standard for this time of year. Quick and painless is kind of the deal with these. They blow in pretty fierce, get cold for a day or two and then blow out with some calm days behind them.

On the days we are out, we are seeing plenty of fish. It’s not outstanding out there, but plenty solid for late Winter fishing. The water has remained very cold still. We just haven’t had enough sun or warm days to do much for those water temps. So low to mid 40’s are common most mornings. So that has been the biggest holdup on the fish. They just aren’t overly excited everywhere. They have their moments for sure, but we are still seeing far more fish laying around than being active. But that will change.

We’ve been fishing everything from San Antonio Bay down to Nine Mile Hole lately and finding fish throughout. But it sure seems like the fish are just waiting for things to warm up a bit more. Even on our nicest days lately, they just don’t get fired up during the day like you want them to. They want to, but just don’t quite have it in them yet.

Any active fish we find out there is plenty happy to eat a fly. They aren’t picky at all. As long as its in front of them, and not moving too quickly, they’ll eat. Some still charge the fly, but most are a little more leisurely with their approach. But pretty much anything will work out there. We still prefer darker colored stuff. Especially with the large numbers of drum around lately. Not uncommon to get a handful of shots at drum every day right now. Some are average size, but most are tanks. So we are especially liking the black stuff to get those stinky guys to eat.

we’ve always told people that Winter in Rockport or South Texas is pretty much over that third week of February every year. Not that we don’t get cold fronts beyond that, because we do. But you can just tell there is a difference. The fronts have a lot less bight to them, are shorter and are the rarity more than the norm. So by our calendar, that means by the end of this week we hope to be turning the corner towards Spring. Already we have had a couple nice days this week with temps in the mid 70’s. Now we just need the overnight temps to hold up as well. Then, you start getting more winds from the Southeast bringing warm air our direction. The days are getting longer and putting more sunlight on the water, which warms things up for the fish. Just everything begins to change. So mark it on your calendars, Spring fishing is starting in the next week or so. Finally!

We have a couple of our guys headed up to Troutfest this weekend, while the rest stay on the coast and will be in the boats all weekend. But after this weekend, it’s all hands on deck out there. We have boats out every day for the foreseeable future, so long as the weather plays nice. Spring dates are filling up very quickly, with Summer following right behind. And as this weather warms, things just get busier and busier down here.
