It’s time for an update from the flats, and what better time to do it than a cold rainy day on the Texas central coast. So we are inside staying warm and dry today, but will fill you in about what we’ve been seeing out on the water as of late.

It was actually a pretty nice week on the coast. The weather was warm and winds were light almost all week. So we had everyone out on the water this week chasing fish around. Things early in the week fished really well, but got a bit trickier later in the week as we got close to a pretty sizable cold front that is currently camping on top of us. But we were still able to get out on the water every day. Just a bit soggy out there Friday.

All of our boats are seeing and catching plenty of fish. But certainly finding a few more snotty fish around as that front got closer to us. But persistence pays off. It was just a bit tougher than we think it should be for early November. But we won’t complain, especially after boating a bunch of fish in a stout rain all day Friday.

There are plenty of singles around. Some crawling along the flats very shallow, showing their backs. A few solo tailers are standard throughout the day as well. And if you know where to look, there are still a good number of schooling redfish around. The schools aren’t too large, maybe 20-30 fish in most of them. But it isn’t too tough to find a decent number of these schools around right now.

Again, we did see a few finicky fish this week. Just a funky attitude with the fronts coming in. So some very good fly presentations were not rewarded. Dark patterns were still our best. But they needed to be on the smaller side for sure. IF and when the black stuff was refused, even smaller and white was a pretty legit backup plan. Or when all else fails, you don’t need a different fly, you need a different fish!

And as always, you can check out a few of our favorite flies here.

We are riding out this storm another couple of days here. So we will be tying bugs, catching up on computer work and other random stuff. But once this front blows through, you can expect these fish to go nuts. So middle next week and on we expect the fishing to be completely outstanding. Kind of the payoff for enduring a few days of cold and rain.

We have boats out every day this time of year, but still have the ability to get you out on the water. If you are looking to get out on the water, you can always contact us any time if you would like to BOOK A TRIP or need any up to the minute Southwest Texas fly fishing or Rockport fishing report type news. Fall fishing is some of our favorite, and best of the year. We’ve finally get the heat of Summer outta here and things are a lot nicer out there these days. So let us fill you in on what we are seeing out there on the Texas flats right now. Here we go!

The past week or so has fished well. We did have a couple of days with weather that either kept us off the water altogether, or made it pretty darn tough out there. But that was short lived. Just dealing with a couple of front passing through that put the fish off a little bit. But that was short lived. Later in the week things picked up again and we were right back where we are supposed to be this time of year… really good fishing.

Our guides have been fishing all over the place these days. It’s been good everywhere. POC, Port A and even further South. The fishing has been really solid everywhere.

Fly selections haven’t changed much. Fish are eating pretty much everything. But darker crab flies are always a fan fave. And fish are moving big distances to eat em. But if you prefer shrimpy type stuff, that is just fine as well. They’re gone eat it if they see it.

And as always, you can check out a few of our favorite flies here.

Sorry we are a few days later than usual to update, but we’ve been busy out on the water every day. But we are catching up and here to fill you in on what we we’ve been seeing out on the flats the past few days and what we expect for the week to come.

Spring fishing is in full force here on the Texas flats. And it’s really darn good right now. Tis the season for schooling redfish. We’re talking big schools of fish going completely nuts pretty much all day long. All kinds of fun.

Most of the schools will have 25-50 fish in them. Not to mention the random trout, hardhead or skipjack. But it’s pretty normal to find a school or two each day with 100 plus fish in it. All digging feverishly for food. Again, super fun stuff.

Since our last report, we’ve had really high water, really low water, and now pretty average type tides. So that has made it a bit interesting. With the water up, the schools were still there and happily doing their thing. But finding grass shallow enough for them to dig in wasn’t easy. So many of them were doing their thing, but rarely getting a tail out of the water. After a big wind event a week ago, we blew a good couple of feet of water out of the bays. This focused the fish even more, creating even more schools that now were easy to find and waiving their tails out of the water. Which brings us to today.

Depending on your zone, it may even be schools or bust. As in, there are so many fish schooled up in an area, that you struggle to find singles or cruisers. Not a big deal, but certainly something to be aware of if you are finding lots of schools in an area. If you want to move into area free of grasses, like mud or sand bottom, there are tons of black drum around as well in all shapes and sizes. Never hurts to have a backup plan.

For flies we are on a similar program as our last report. While these schools of redfish have been large and happy, every once in a while they will be a little selective on what they are willing to eat. Anything shrimpy is a safe bet for sure. Darker colored crab patterns are working too, but they must be smaller. About the size of a nickel has worked well, and will keep you free of hardheads as well. Hate those things! But really they are eating most flies. Just keep them small in size and they will be willing. Topwater flies in and around those schools is a sure bet as well.

And as always, you can check out a few of our favorite flies here.

You can expect much more of the same for the coming days and weeks. Tails, schooling fish, bank crashers and pretty much happy fish for the next little while. Or at least until the dog days of Summer set in. We would like to see the weather stabilize a bit more than it has. A bit late in the Spring to be having this much random stuff going on. But the fish really don’t seem to mind and just keep tailing right on through the rain. So we can’t complain.

We have boats out every day this time of year. But still have the ability to get you out on the water. If you are looking to get out on the water, you can always contact us any time if you would like to BOOK A TRIP or need any up to the minute Southwest Texas fly fishing or Rockport fishing report type news. We thought it would be nice to give you a quick update, as we head into the weekend here on the Texas Coast. So here is what we are seeing out on the flats this week and for the days to come.

Fishing has remained strong throughout this week. We’ve had boats out every day and all are catching fish. We were chased off the water early on Tuesday with a legit Thunderstorm are crazy winds. But the rest of the days have been just fine. Although we wouldn’t mind a little friendlier weather around here.

The fish are doing their thing. It’s the seeing them part that has been a bit tougher. We are a little light on sunshine around here lately. Not exactly ideal for us sight fisherman. But not a deal breaker either. Just a bit trickier.

Luckily, we are finding multiple schools of fish every day now. So our guides have been spending some time on those, as they are a bit easier to see in the tough light conditions. Some will be tailing, if they are in shallow enough. But most are just deep enough that you likely aren’t going to see their tails. But they are there and doing their thing.

Most of the schools are between 15-25 fish. But some larger ones have been seen as well. And don’t be surprised to see some hardheads in with them. Tis the season. We’ve also been boating trout every day out of these same schools. Nothing like casting into a large school of redfish, and coming away with a 14″ trout. Ugh. But they are still fun as well.

There are cruising fish, bank crashers and such as well. But they have been tough to see with the light conditions we’ve had all week. Some are shallow enough you will see them easily, but with the higher tides we have right now, that isn’t always the case. So we’ve preferred the schools we are finding, then filling in the blanks as we can with the solo fish.

For flies, we are kinda running the usual. Shrimp and crab patterns are easily eaten right now. Schools or solo fish, doesn’t really matter. They will get after it. Topwater stuff is great as well, if you are nearer those schools. Any of those fish will come up on a small topwater fly. Shrimpy looking stuff is preferred. Most of the flies have been a little on the smaller side still, that are working the best. Just matching what these fish are digging in the grass for around here right now. But still, with as many schools as we are seeing, it’s not hard to get the fly eaten once its in front of them. No matter what it is. And as always, you can check out a few of our favorite flies here.

We have boats out both days this weekend and all of next week. However we are looking at some interesting weather for Sunday and Monday. So we will wait and see if that simmers down some and allows us to get out still. But the rest of the week is looking just fine, so will report back later in the week with an update to our Rockport Fishing Report.

And as always, if you are looking to get out on the water, you can always contact us any time if you would like to BOOK A TRIP or need any up to the minute Southwest Texas fly fishing or Rockport fishing report type news. We’ve made it to the middle of April already, and things have been looking up for the past week. Hopefully Spring is here to stay this time and the fishing will continue to get better and better.

All last week the weather was great. Sunday was a bit on the blowy side, with wind gusts reported up to and over 40 mph. But the rest of the week was outstanding. Sun, light winds and comfortable temps made for a really nice week on the water. We had a bunch of boats out all week long and everyone came back with strong reports.

Whether they were fishing in POC, or closer to the Rockport area, the reports were all pretty similar. Tails and schools are starting to become the norm. Particularly in the morning hours. But there have been schools around later in the day as well. Most of the schools are on the smaller size, maybe 5-12 fish. But we’ve seen a few larger schools with upwards of 25 fish. Expect more of those in the days to come for sure.

There are plenty of cruisers and solos as well. Some will be crashing bait on the banks, but most are just moving around looking for food nice and easy. Getting them to eat hasn’t been much of a problem, if presented the right way. Also, they seem to be preferring flies a little bit on the smaller side of things. But a bunch of different patterns have gotten eating this week.

A small crab fly, smaller than a quarter, has been a popular choice. Dark tan or light olive have worked well. Others are throwing some shrimp patterns that are weighted, but smaller. Less than 2″ in length. The fish don’t seem to mind scooping those up easily as well. If you are curious about some of our favorite flies, you can always check out a few of our favorite flies here.

For the week ahead we will still have boats out on the water every day. It’s a bit windier this week, but not too bad. Kind of what you expect during the Spring. Nice mornings, then a bit of wind as you work towards the early afternoon. But the temps are perfect and the fish are happy. So not a bad thing at all.

We will report back later in the week hopefully, with an update to our Rockport Fishing Report for the weekend. And as always, if you are looking to get out on the water, you can always contact us any time if you would like to BOOK A TRIP or need any up to the minute Southwest Texas fly fishing or Rockport fishing report type news. The weather improved quicker than expected, so we were able to get a bunch of boats out this weekend. So here is what we were seeing out there the past couple of days, and looking forward to this week.

At the time of our last report, things were pretty grim. We were looking at a pretty nasty cold front with heavy winds, rain and temps as low as the upper 40’s. While we did get a pretty solid punch from the weather, it really wasn’t as bad as anticipated. And it ended up blowing through by Friday night, allowing us to get boats out on the water all weekend.

Reports from both Saturday and Sunday were pretty darn good. Saturday was a bit on the cloudy side. But the fish were fired up. Tails, large school and bank crashers were seen by all of our boats on the water that day. Made the clouds much less of an issue for sure. Today (Sunday), we were blessed with light winds and sunny skies all day long. So it too fished pretty darn well.

Flies were a mixed bag between the boats. One was on the shrimpy side of things and did well. A couple others were on the crabbier end of the spectrum and also boated plenty of fish. There were a few picky fish out there, but certainly not the norm. So we wouldn’t stress too much on the fly selection necessarily. If the fish stay happy out there, you wouldn’t expect them to be too picky, so long as it’s presented correctly. But if you are curious about some flies, you can always check out a few of our favorite flies here.

Looking forward at the coming week, the weather looks really really good. We have warmer temps, light winds and plenty of sun on the docket for the entire week. Apparently it is going to be Spring again. Perfect!

We will have a bunch of boats out all this week. So we will keep our socials up to date with images and stuff. And very likely another updated Rockport Fishing Report towards the end of the week.

If you are looking to get out on the water, you can always contact us any time if you would like to BOOK A TRIP or need any up to the minute Southwest Texas fly fishing or Rockport fishing report type news. But yes, we do have a bit of a weather problem for the next few days. So here is where we are at, and what we see headed forward, in the near future for fly fishing in Rockport and the surrounding area.

As this is being written, it is pouring rain outside. This started mid afternoon down here on the coast, and will be with us for a good while. As it stands now, we have had to cancel all of our trips through Saturday. We are looking at 5-7″ of rain over the course of the next few days they are saying. We’ll see if that happens or not of course. But either way, it is nasty down here. So there is no reason to be fishing here for the next few days.

If you believe the weather man, things begin to break late Saturday down here. So we are still planning on being on the water again Sunday and on. The weather Sunday should be much improved and it’s looking great heading into next week.

Due to weather, shuffling schedules and cancelations, we do now have some boats open for Sunday and into next week. So let us know if you would like to get out on the water. We can make it happen. And of course we are always prepared for those last second trips as well.

April is here, and hopefully some better weather than we saw for most of March. It’s Spring fishing time on the Texas Coast!

After another handful of crap weather days earlier this week, we were able to get a bunch of boats out on the water again today. The winds were light and even had the sun burn through for the majority of the day out there. Not a bad way to start April. Hopefully the coming days play nice as well.

The reports from our boats today were solid. Schooling fish, tails, some bank crashers and even a few jacks were seen out there today. All of our boats managed to get fish to the boat, some in very good numbers.

Tides are a little lower than average, but not a problem. Still plenty of water to get into most spots we are wanting to get in. We had decent water movement out there as well, losing a good few inches in the morning. But it all came back before we packed it in for the afternoon. So the fish were appreciating all the moving water for sure.

There was a variety of flies used today. One boat stuck to the black/purple crab all day without a problem. Others went to a bit more shrimpy option. But all were eaten without too much pause. A topwater would’ve worked well for the tails and schooling fish. Maybe something we will make happen out there tomorrow. As always, you can check out our ever changing fly selection here. Never know what we have going on out there. But promise it WILL NOT be a stupid Clouser!!!

More boats headed out tomorrow. Looking like more of the same all this week. Although it looks like we may start seeing a bit more of that Spring wind out there. Tis the season. But nothing bad enough to keep us off the water.

So let us know if you would like to get out on the water. We can make it happen next week, or beyond. And of course we are always prepared for those last second trips as well.

It’s Spring Break week here on the coast, which means the weather is going to suck. Always seems to work out that way. But here is what we are seeing out there.

After a very nice weekend last weekend, where we had all of our boats on the water, we have had a few days off here this week. In fact, we’ve canceled everything from Monday through this coming Sunday already. The weather is complete crap. Cooler, strong North winds, rain, lightning and who know what else. But the really bad stuff doesn’t start until Friday. Then we will have overnight lows in the low 40’s and all that crap. Not exactly beach weather for all these Spring Breakers. Bummer.

The fishing over the weekend was outstanding. We’ve gotten some water back and the fish have moved further back into flats that had been dry the weeks prior. So things were looking good. Now we will wait and see what happens after these cold fronts. There is a likelyhood that some of that water gets blown right back out of the bays. But time will tell.

For now, we are taking it easy and bolstering up our fly selection in the old fly box. It’s a good week to tie flies, play golf or do pretty much anything other than be in a flats boat. There was even the idea floated that all our Fly Fish Rockport guides may be bowling a day. Eek!

Unfortunately the weather dictates what we do. And it’s just not going to work out this week at all. So we will sit and wait, in hopes that things improve early next week.

So let us know if you would like to get out on the water. We can make it happen next week, or beyond. And of course we are always prepared for those last second trips as well.

We are filming a series of new tying videos coming to our Youtube channel. So if there are specific flies you would like to see or want instructions on, let us know. There will be redfish patterns, as well as patterns for some upcoming trips we have to The Keys, Cuba and beyond.

If you are looking to get out on the water, you can always contact us any time if you would like to BOOK A TRIP or need any up to the minute Southwest Texas fly fishing or Rockport fishing report type news.
