Mustang Island State Park Fly Fishing

How is fly fishing the Texas saltwater flats different?

Fly fishing one of the numerous flats around Corpus Christi is a unique and exciting experience. The shallow, crystal clear water allows the angler to see everything as the fish are cruising, tailing, or just resting on the bottom. Then as your talented guide poles you closer, you have the opportunity to cast to the fish and see them react; hopefully taking your fly, and giving you an exciting fight! Texas redfish are strong and feisty, and it has been said that they can be the most challenging redfish on the Gulf Coast.

Since the water is so clear, the fish are accustomed to being able to see what is taking place in their environment. That makes it important for an angler to be ready to quickly cast 30-40 feet, accurately, with as few false casts as possible, in marginal winds, with a lengthy leader and weighted fly. One who can do this ACCURATELY and consistently will have numerous quality looks at fish throughout their day.

However, as challenging as this may be, flats fishing is not just for experts. The Fly Fish Rockport guides are patient and talented teachers. Number of fish brought to the boat could be fewer than that of angler who has fished the saltwater and developed additional skills, but even a beginner or novice will see fish, have many chances, and by the end of the day will be a much better angler.
