Experience Laguna Madre Fly Fishing with Fly Fish Rockport

Laguna Madre Flats Fishing Texas

The Laguna Madre is a long, shallow lagoon along the western coast of Texas. In total it runs approximately 130 miles. The Upper Laguna Madre begins just to the south of Corpus Christi, Texas and continues to the Mexican border to the South. It is protected, in its entirety, by Padre Island, the natural barrier island and the Padre Island National Seashore. Located just a short trip from our headquarters in nearby Rockport, Texas, the Upper Laguna Madre and surrounding waters are some of our favorites to fish. This area includes the waters just South of Corpus Christ, Baffin Bay, The Land Cut and the world famous Nine Mile Hole.

An angler seeking various species, abundant fish, and an opportunity to fish a multitude of saltwater flats, is certain to enjoy a great time fly fishing the Upper Laguna Madre. Superb fishing is just a quick ride in a boat from the marinas located in Corpus Christi. All year, abundant numbers of redfish, flounder, sheepshead, sea trout (speckled trout, specs), black drum, and other species can be found in these waters. For those fly fishing Laguna Madre during the warm times of year, there may be the possibility of jack crevalle (jacks), a tarpon, kingfish, or cobia.

Our Laguna Madre fly fishing guides are committed to helping you have the best experience possible. This includes the opportunity to access one of the pristine flats in a poling skiff, or perhaps you would like to try for a tarpon off of one of the jetties. Anglers are also welcome to seek out tailing redfish from a personal SUP or kayak in the incredible Baffin Bay.

What Makes this Experience Distinct?

Fishing a Texas flat is often considered an experience that can challenge any angler’s skills. You have a unique opportunity to spot fish cruising and feeding in the shallow, flawless water. An angler then can actually see the fish respond when the angler (hopefully) casts a fly that is taken by a flighty redfish. These fish are robust and feisty; because the water clarity is so great, they can also see what is going on around them. This makes it essential that the angler and skiff are quiet and stealthy. Many compare this type of fishing to hunting for this very reason. Stalking a spooky redfish is an exciting, engaging, and heart pounding experience!

An angler who comes to fly fish Laguna Madre with the ability to cast 30-40 feet accurately and reliably, with varied wind, limited false casts, lengthy leader, and a heavy fly will be rewarded with numerous quality chances to catch great fish. However, that in no way indicates that fishing the Texas flats is just for experienced anglers. Beginners and experts alike will all have a superb time testing their skills and learning new ones! The Upper Laguna Madre fly fishing guides are excellent teachers and will patiently help ensure all levels of anglers become more proficient and have some great chances at fish by the conclusion of their trip.
