Tying G’s Texas Toad Fly in Olive

Tying G's Texas Toad Fly in Olive Toad style flies are always an excellent option while fly fishing for redfish and black drum on the Texas flats. Our Fly Fish Rockport fly fishing guides use these flies often, in a variety of colors, weights and sizes. Darker colors, like this olive version, are usually our favorites. But lighter shrimp type colors work as well. Or perhaps try tying this same pattern on a 2/0 hook for tarpon? The Toad is also a proven tarpon pattern, particularly in the Florida Keys. Here, Fly Fish Rockport guide Captain Gibson ties his Texas Toad in a dark olive color. You can

Tying G’s Marsh Minnow Fly

Tying G’s Kingfish Ballyhoo Fly

It's that time of year where our Fly Fish Rockport fly fishing guides are taking advantage of any opportunity to sneak away from the flats, and out into the blue water in search of our favorite migratory pursuits. Every Spring we await the arrival of our Kingfish (King Mackerel). These toothy predators lurk just off the beaches of our coastline and are a great target with a fly rod. But you've got to have the right flies in your box! Here, Fly Fish Rockport guide Captain Gibson teaches you how to tie one of his favorite patterns for Kingfish. This is a must have when fly fishing nearshore or

Rockport Fishing Report – May 29th

It's Friday, and darn near June, and time for another Rockport fishing report. This will be the last report for the month of May. Also, just in time for the weekend. Although it pretty much seems that you can't really tell the difference between the weekdays and weekends around here lately. Regardless, here is your Rockport fishing report. As mentioned already, it has been hectic down on the Texas Coast lately. We managed to survive Memorial Day Weekend, somehow. Ask any local, and they will tell you they've never seen it that busy around the area... EVER. It was completely nuts. Luckily, we were able to get out on

Rockport Fishing Report – May 17th

It's the end of another week, and time for an update to the Rockport Fishing Report. We got behind a bit on our reports. Mainly due to a complete computer meltdown here at the mothership. But after a lot of cursing, and pounding on things, a shiny new computer or two are the newest additions to the family over here. So, we are back in action and will be keeping our Rockport Fishing Reports up to date once again. Things on the Coastal Bend of Texas are pretty good right now. All of the marinas and boat ramps are open again. Although you may notice that most have kept

Rockport Fishing Report – April 20th

A little later than planned, but time for another Rockport Fishing Report for mid to late April. We are a bit behind schedule from our last report. Sorry about that. Maybe us non-essential people are just taking that to heart a bit too much? Either way, we will fill you in with what we are seeing out on the water while fly fishing the Texas flats in and around Rockport, Texas. Since our last report, a few things have changed around here, but not too many. One of the more popular marinas in Aransas Pass, Conn Brown Harbor Park, is now closed. Apparently the city was tired of the

Texas Coast Coronavirus Update April 7th

Well... as predicted, things changed pretty much right after our last update. So I figured I would do my best to bring everyone up to speed again, as to where we are at with all things Covid-19, as it pertains to fly fishing the Texas Coast. So let's see how I do this time. From my last report on these issues, we were starting to see some closures on the Texas Coast, but we were still allowed to operate as guides. That hammer finally fell no more than 48 hours after I posted that. The Governor declared a Shelter-in-Place order for the entire state of Texas. In this declaration,

Rockport Texas Coronavirus Update March 31st

With everything going on in the world and Coastal Bend of Texas these days, we thought we would share a little update on where we are at down here in Rockport and on the Coast. By the time I write this, it will most certainly be outdated already. Things are evolving that fast around here. But we will try to share where we are at right now, and what we know going forward, as little as that may be. First and foremost, I am very happy to share that all of us over here at Fly Fish Rockport are in perfect health and doing well. And we most certainly

Rockport Fishing Report – March 22nd

A bit later than planned, but here is an updated fishing report for Rockport, Texas and surrounding waters. We've made it a majority of the way through March already. So we will update you with what we are seeing and doing on the Texas flats while we are fly fishing for redfish. Tonight marks the end of our two busiest weeks of Spring Break around here. Week one was pretty hectic around the Coastal Bend. Even with all the recent events and virus issues. But week two was much more calm. Especially as the week wore on.  Things just kept getting weirder and weirder. But by now, most folks
