December Redfishing in Texas

Welcome to your first Rockport Fishing Report for December. We have had a pretty good storm system moving through the past three or four days. This brought with it much cooler temps, wind and some rain. But things started to turn around this afternoon. Tomorrow looks like it could be “the day” to be out there. Sunny, warmer and little to no wind in the forecast. So we are hoping that there are a bunch of hungry fish moving in behind this storm.

The fishing the days leading up to the storm, which amounted to most of last week, was outstanding. We were seeing school after school of fish each day. Sometimes cruising and sometimes tailing. Most were 5-20 fish, with the occasional larger school. At times, we would land a fish and barely have time to get our act together before the next swam up to the boat and spooked. It was 4 or 5 days of excellent fishing. Even a number of schools of sheepshead moving around, which were willing to take flies for us.

No telling what the fish will do in the days following this storm. The first couple days you would expect the fish to be feeding pretty well. After that… who knows. Hopefully they will continue to tail for us throughout the day. But only time will tell.

The water temps will be down a bit more now, which could get the fish to move a bit closer to their winter program. But it shouldn’t be too dramatic of a change just yet. There will still be plenty of food options for the fish, and plenty of water for them to move deep into the marshes.

We will keep the Rockport fishing reports coming this week, as we get a good feel as to how these fish are behaving after this latest storm. We are out on the water every day this week.
