Fly Fishing Port Aransas, Texas for Redfish

Here is your Mid-March Rockport fishing report for Rockport, TX and the surrounding waters from the Laguna Madre to Matagorda. We have had boats on the water every day this week. So here is what we are seeing out there.

Today marks the end of the first week of Spring Break around here. It’s never that big of a deal for those that are staying in Rockport really. But if you are in Port A, it has been pretty eventful for sure. But it’s never really that bad. Just a few more people around in the evenings when we are off the water. As for on the water… It is certainly a bit busier out there. We did our best to get away and avoid the crowds. But you can only do so much. There was still plenty of water to play in. You just might be joined by the occasional jet skis, wind surfers, paddle boarders, etc. We even had a kite boarder ripping around one of the back lakes we were fishing one afternoon. It was actually pretty fun watching him jump in and out of the lake, over a bunch of mangroves.

Even with all that going on, the fishing was very good all week. We have had pretty legit winds most every day, which can be annoying. But the fish don’t care. They are still plenty happy. Our mornings have been very very good lately. Lot’s of schooling fish. Lot’s of crashing banks. And lot’s of tails as well. So that has made the lower light hours very productive most mornings. As the sun gets up higher, you will see plenty of cruising fish in a variety of water.

We have had a bunch of good tides this past week as well. This has made the fish movements pretty predictable as well. As that water comes flooding back into the lakes and marshes, the fish have been responding very well. Lot’s of bank crashing as they are chasing around the incoming baitfish on the tides.

A variety of flies have worked this week. On the cleaner bottoms, free of grass, the crab pattern is still killing it. Dark is still our color of choice; brown, black or dark olive. Ours have medium lead eyes and are about the size of a quarter, or a bit bigger. The fish have been eating them up like crazy.

Other patterns have included the Ice Shrimp, Reducer and a variety of Gurgler patterns. We played with the color selection, but all got eaten. As Spring continues on, the topwater thing will keep getting better and better. So not a bad idea to have a second rod strung up with one of those, should the opportunity present itself.

Overall, the fishing is quite good now and should continue that way. We have warmer weather in the works, which will continue to warm the water a bit more. All good news for us, and the fish. It is Spring on the Texas Coast though, so that means the wind will continue to blow a bit. But it isn’t that bad at all, especially earlier in the days. But the boat ride home might be a bit bumpier than was the ride out. But the fish are there and are hungry. So for those willing to put in the work in the wind, it is totally worth it.

We have some news coming up pretty soon as well. There will be changes and expansion to the website, the addition of new lodging, new Fly Fish Rockport fishmasks, new boats and all kinds of other randomness. So keep checking back as we try to get all this stuff up and running, in between guide trips.

We are out every day for the foreseeable future and will be fishing the bays from Matagorda to the Laguna Madre. We will keep the Rockport fishing reports coming. And of course folks can always follow along on Instagram, Facebook and even Snapchat for the very latest news. We try to post something most every day there. Or of course you can email any time for additional info or ask about what we did that day.
